Ghostbusters III: Who Would You Cast?

ghostbusters 239x300 Ghostbusters III: Who Would You Cast?Apparently a third Ghostbusters film is finally in development – two writers from The Office have been brought in to pen the script, which would feature the elder Ghostbusters training a new round of recruits. The studio presumably hopes to “reinvent” the franchise (c’mon, who isn’t getting tired of all these reboots and “reimaginings”?), so that subsequent sequels would feature the new Ghostbusters. Damn, doesn’t anyone have faith in Bill Murray anymore? Surely the man has another 20 years left in him?

Somehow Judd Apatow’s name got thrown into the mix (he’s since denied any involvement), and his usual clan of goofballs have been put forth as possibilities. The most prominently recurring names: Seth Rogen, Ben Stiller (who, at one point, Aykroyd himself had penned a Ghostbusters script for, back when Murray had no interest in coming back), Paul Rudd, and Steve Carrell.

I’m good with three of those names. In place of Rogen, I think they should get Vince Vaughn or Seann William Scott (yeah, that’s right, I like Seann William Scott — you got a problem with that?). Vaughn would be a great balance against Murray. But would he, Murray and Rudd be too much dry sarcasm for one film? An alternative would be Jason Segel.

That being said, I’d rather have a film that focuses solely on the original clan. Comedies are generally shorter than other genre pictures – after 20 + years, I’d rather have a full 90 minutes of Murray, Aykroyd and co. – not extended cameos. I’m just afraid that with such a large cast, people would be pushed to the sidelines. That would be a crying shame.

Then again, I was never really a huge Ghostbusters fan – the first flick’s fun, but I never thought it was as great as some people from my generation do.

What do you think? Who would you prefer to see cast in the film? Post your comments below!
