Watch out, Lil' Wayne!

Remember a couple months ago when Joaquin Phoenix claimed that he was retiring from making movies in favour of a career in music? Most people probably assumed that he would produce a country-rock album, considering the critical praise that his Johnny Cash cover songs were met with for the Walk the Line soundtrack in 2005. However, it’s probably fair to say that not many people predicted Phoenix would opt, instead, for a career as the next Fiddy Cent.

That’s right - Joaquin Phoenix is a rapper, now. He’s teaming up with P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/Sean Combs to produce a bonafide hip-hop record. And the best part? The whole ordeal is going to be filmed by his friend, Casey Affleck (who, you may recall, was present for the “exclusive” interview when Phoenix first announced his retirement).

Included below are two videos (recorded earlier today) of Phoenix’s grand debut as a rap star, filmed live in Las Vegas. The first video is the performance itself, while the second video shows a presumably drunken and/or high Phoenix literally falling off the side of the stage.

Pretty crazy, right? Phoenix told the following to People Magazine right before he took to the stage:

“This is me saying this is who I am. This is my story … After all the years of reading scripts and reading lines, this is my chance to do something straight from the heart and put it out there … When I was young I liked punk rock music but then I discovered rap. I love the storytelling aspect of hip-hop.”

It’s worth mentioning that Casey Affleck is married to Phoenix’s sister. So he’s either keeping a careful eye on the dude, making sure he doesn’t snort one too many lines of coke or get comfortable with one too many groupies, or - and this could be really delicious if it’s true - the whole thing is an elaborate Spinal Tap-esque practical joke. Maybe - just maybe - Phoenix is more brilliant than any of us could have ever imagined. Maybe he’s the next Andy Kaufman, playing some kind of postmodern surrealistic joke on us. Maybe the documentary Affleck is filming will turn out to be the rap equivalent of Borat.

Or maybe Joaquin Phoenix is just a drugged-up narcissistic freak who asked himself one evening, “What would it be like if I combined L.A. Woman era Jim Morrison with Notorious B.I.G.?”

Either way, the result should be entertaining.
